THE BERLIN WALL was erected on this day in 1961, when the East German government divided Berlin with a barbed-wire barrier to prevent more of the eastern population from moving west. Later in the week the government erected a concrete wall. Until 1989, the wall physically and ideologically divided the city, and included guard towers and anti-vehicle trenches. The wall came to symbolize the “Iron Curtain” separating Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe from the West during the Cold War. The wall was torn down in 1989 following a series of revolutions in Eastern Bloc countries that caused civil unrest in East Germany. When the East German government announced that their citizens were permitted to once again visit West Berlin, crowds of East Germans crossed the barrier in celebration. Germany was formally reunified in October 1990.
“I’m fortunate to be a coward, to have a low threshold of fear, because a hero couldn’t make a good suspense film.”
